We will discuss how Impressionism marked a shift towards abstraction, and study the transition from strict observation to an expression of the artist's inner world. By discovering why major artists such as Manet, Cezanne, Monet, Gauguin, and Matisse made conceptual and formal decisions, we can better understand the origins of Expressionism as a set of attitudes. Along with these discussions we will create our own expressionistic paintings by working from life and photographs. In this course, you will complete studies of a still-life and a landscape. We will immerse ourselves in the possibilities color has to offer, and embrace new ways of visualizing the world.
